Skilled Worker Visa

Skilled Worker Visa

A Skilled Worker visa has replaced the previous Tier 2 (General) work visa. It allows you to reside in
the UK while performing an eligible job for an approved employer. To qualify for this visa, you must

work in an eligible occupation for a UK employer approved by the Home Office to host workers under
this scheme. You must have a completed certificate of sponsorship from your employer and be paid a
minimum salary based on your occupation.

Eligibility and Extensions

You cannot apply for a Skilled Worker Work visa until you have a confirmed job offer, and you must
be able to speak, write, read and understand the English language. You will need to demonstrate your
English language proficiency as part of the application process.
A Skilled Worker Work visa can last up to 5 years, and you can extend your visa as often as you want
to, provided that you still meet the eligibility requirements. You will need to extend or update your visa
whenever you change jobs or employers or if your visa is approaching its expiry date.
After 5 years, you may be eligible to apply to settle permanently in the country, which, if granted,
entitles you to live, work and study in the country for as long as you would like to, including applying
for any benefits for which you are eligible.

Application Process

The application process is entirely online and can vary based on whether you are applying from
outside of the UK, already in the UK and applying for an extension to your current visa or in the UK
and switching from a different visa. To be accepted, you will need to be eligible for the visa, pay the
application fee, which ranges from £625 to £1,423, pay the £624 annual healthcare surcharge and
demonstrate that you have personal savings of at least £1270.
You will also need to prove your identity and provide the required identification documentation for
verification.
As part of the application process, you will need to demonstrate your English proficiency, either by
passing a Secure English Language Test, having a recognised qualification in English which was
gained through study in the UK whilst you were under the age of 18 or by having a degree-level
academic qualification that was taught in English.

Challenging Refusals

You can appeal against a refusal of entry or against a refusal of an extension within 28 days of receipt
of the refusal letter, provided that you can prove that you are proficient in English and have complied
with all of the rules of the Skilled Worker Work visa scheme
